7 blog ideas for service-based businesses --

So, you’ve finally amped yourself up and are feeling ready to begin blogging for your business. You’re at your keyboard, ready to type, and then you realize… you have nothing to say. *womp womp*

Writer’s block is a thing, even for naturally gifted writers. For whatever reason, we business owners have a difficult time speaking about ourselves. We have knowledge to share, but sometimes (most of the time), it’s difficult to know how to parse those thoughts out, get them onto the keyboard, through the screen, edited and uploaded.

I want to help take the guessing work out of blogging for your service-based business. The truth is that you have plenty to write about - so much so, that you should never run out of topics to cover! Sometimes, it just takes an outsider’s perspective to realize that you are, in fact, the best.

(Okay fine, you don’t have to get that cocky. But like 10% of that energy will do. Fair enough?)

Here are 7 blog post ideas for your service business!

  1. BTS (Behind the Scenes)

Regardless of whether you run a photography, graphic design, hairstyling or pottery business, I can confidently say that your process is interesting to watch. And your ideal client? They want to see it.

You know how those Youtube “what’s in my bag” or “pack for vacation with me” videos will oddly and strangely keep you transfixed? It’s because we’re nosy. In that same vein, your ideal client is… nosy. They want to see what you do, how you do it, and understand a bit more about you and your business before jumping on board.

So, share behind the scenes of your process and projects. Share your studio, at-home office, or work station. Talk about what you always have, what you can’t live without. Show the rough stuff, before the edits and perfect final touches - and then show the end result. There’s something wildly rewarding and comforting in getting the full breakdown, from the messy beginning, to the beautiful finish.

2. How-tos

If I screamed DROP AND GIVE ME 10 HOW-TO BLOGS RIGHT NOW, I bet that you could do it. Because screaming is stressful, and stress tends to push us to do things we thought we couldn’t do, and also because you know a lot more than you think you do.

Your how-tos could be something as simple as “how to pose for your portrait sessions,” or “how to properly clean your lens after a shoot.” It could be something less niche and more business-related, like “how to write a blog” or “how to choose the best accounting software for your creative business.”

Do you see what I mean? You know things - just write about HOW to do those things, and how you know how to do those things.

Many things, so much doing. So many blogs.

3. Resources

We service providers use a ton of resources. We read blogs, we watch content, we use platforms to learn, and platforms to perform. And, generally speaking, we know what works for us, and what doesn’t.

Your audience of fellow creatives and service providers will appreciate the opportunity to learn about the platforms you love and utilize. On the flip side, you can write about resources, tools and tips that your ideal clients should know about, too!

4. Single subjects

Take this blog for example: I am writing a blog about blog topics for service-based businesses. This blog contains a single subject: blogging. But, I have also written larger blogs that discuss your entire marketing strategy, too.

You can apply this method to virtually anything you do. If you’re a photographer, write a blog on a single subject like editing natural lighting, or styling for a specific kind of product. If you’re a hairstylist, you might choose to give a tutorial on how to achieve a polished blowout, or your favorite heat protecting product.

Many times, we creatives believe that we need to solve every single problem, and talk about every single thing, in every blog. The truth is that your blogs can be as grand or as simple as you choose - and typically, those simpler, single-subject blogs tend to perform the best.

5. Lists

People love lists. Lists are easy to digest, and are visually appealing. Lists are easy to screenshot, share and save - they’re memorable, too.

Share lists of your favorite tools, products or resources. Share lists of your favorite recent projects, color palettes, or anything else. If you love it and know about it, you can likely list it.

6. Before & After

Show the before, the during, and the after of a recent project. Talk through the client’s needs and wants, and how you reached an agreement on what would be best for their needs. Then, discuss how you achieved that vision, and show off the outcome.

Before and after blogs are great because they 1) showcase your knowledge and 2) indirectly teach others, too. Plus, they’re a great way to get your portfolio out there, if you’re a visual creator!

7. Your month/quarter/year in review (and your learnings)

Sometimes, the best blogs come from the heart. Don’t be afraid to write a month, quarter or year in review. Discuss the highs, the lows, your learnings, and where you’ll go from here. Not only is this style of a blog a great way to document and record your business as your grow, but it can serve as an educational resource to other budding business owners, too!

Just remember - writing a blog is better than not writing a blog. Start practicing, and you’ll find your groove!
